MARION HAYDEN – BASS Born in Detroit, MI, a crucible of jazz, Marion Hayden is one of the finest bassists of her generation. Mentored by master trumpeter Marcus Belgrave, Hayden began performing jazz at the age of 15. She has performed with such luminaries as Bobby McFerrin, Nancy Wilson, Geri Allen, Regina Carter, Alvin Waddles and James Carter. Her ensemble Detroit Legacy represents the Detroit Sound to the world. She is co-founder of the Grammy-nominated ensemble Straight Ahead and a touring artist with the Detroit Jazz Festival All-Star Ambassadors. Widely recognized as a standard bearer of cultural and artistic history Hayden was awarded the prestigious Kresge Artist Fellowship, the Jazz Hero Award and a Congressional Commendation. Studio projects include: Highland Park: City of Ogoun and Ocean: Notes on Poet Phyllis Wheatley. Current releases are Detroit: Jazz City, Blue Note Records and Marion Hayden Visions.
